Queensland Hazard Perception Test: How Many Questions and What is the Pass Mark?

If you are a Queensland learner driver looking to upgrade to your P1 provisional licence, you must pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). However, many guides online are written for NSW or Victoria, which have completely different rules.

In Queensland, the test has its own unique pass mark, a different number of questions, and a distinct visual style. Here is everything you need to know about the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) test.

The Test Structure: 25 CGI Clips

Unlike NSW, which uses real dashcam footage that can sometimes be grainy, Queensland uses Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) clips. These look like a modern video game, offering clear visibility of hazards.

  • Total Questions: There are 25 clips in the official test.
  • Format: You will watch a driving scenario unfold from the driver's perspective. Your job is to click the mouse (or tap the screen) when a potential crash situation develops—such as a car turning across your path or a pedestrian stepping out.

The Pass Mark: 66%

This is where it gets specific. To pass the Queensland HPT, you generally need to get a "pass" on at least 10 out of 15 of the scored clips. (Note: The test may show you 25 clips total, but often only a subset are the "scored" ones that count towards your final result, or you need to pass approx 66% of the total clips shown).

Official TMR guidelines state you must demonstrate a satisfactory level of hazard perception skills. If you fail, you must pay the fee again to retake it.

The "Set" Structure: Reaction vs. Decision

Queensland's test focuses heavily on situational awareness. You aren't just reacting to a brake light; you are often judging gaps.

For example, you might see a clip where you are waiting to turn right at an intersection. You have to decide when the safe gap appears in the oncoming traffic. Clicking too early (when the gap is unsafe) is a fail. Clicking too late (missed opportunity) is also a fail.

When Can You Take It?

You are eligible to take the QLD HPT once you have held your learner licence for at least 6 months. You do not need to wait until you have 100 logbook hours to take this test, but you must pass it before you can book your practical driving test (Q-SAFE).

Practice the Queensland Way

Practicing with generic clips helps, but it doesn't prepare you for the specific CGI style of the Queensland test. You need to get used to the "video game" look of the hazards.

Our Hazard Perception Test 2026 App features practice modules that cover the specific types of hazards you will see on Queensland roads—from turning traffic to wet weather scenarios. Don't risk your $39.95 test fee; download the app and pass on your first try.
