How to Book Hazard Perception Test Online in Victoria (2026 Update)

Gone are the days of booking an appointment, traveling to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, and sitting a test in a stressful exam room. In Victoria, the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) has moved completely online.

You can now take the test from the comfort of your own home, 24/7. Even better? For most learner drivers, the first attempt is now free. Here is your step-by-step guide to the new system.

Is it Really Free?

Yes. Under the current Victorian Government "Motorist Package," the fee for your first attempt at the Online HPT is waived. You do not need to pay a cent to register.

However, if you fail your first attempt, you will need to pay a fee (approx. $20.70) for each subsequent re-sit. This makes it crucial to pass on your first try!

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you can register, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be at least 17 years and 11 months old.
  • You must hold a valid Victorian Learner Permit.
  • (Recommended) You should have completed, or be close to completing, your 120 logbook hours.

Step 2: Register via MyVicRoads

You cannot book this test over the phone. You must use the online portal.

  1. Go to the myVicRoads website and log in to your account. (If you don't have one, you'll need your Learner Permit number to sign up).
  2. On your dashboard, look for the section titled "Licences & Permits".
  3. Click on the link that says "Register for the Hazard Perception Test Online".
  4. Follow the prompts to verify your identity.

Step 3: Prepare Your Equipment

Since you are taking the test at home, you are responsible for the technology. You cannot take the test on a smartphone.

  • Device: You must use a Desktop PC, Laptop, or a large Tablet (iPad). Mobile phones are not supported.
  • Browser: Use the latest version of Chrome, Safari, or Edge.
  • Internet: Ensure you have a stable connection. If your internet drops out, your test might be voided.
  • Environment: Choose a quiet room where you won't be interrupted for 45 minutes.

Step 4: Taking the Test

Once registered, you can launch the test immediately or come back later. You don't need to "book a time."

  • The test consists of 25 video clips.
  • You have 45 minutes to complete it.
  • You must score at least 54% (13 out of 25) to pass.

Important: This is a formal test. You must do it alone. Getting help from parents or friends is considered cheating.

Don't Waste Your Free Attempt

While the first test is free, failing is inconvenient and expensive. Many learners underestimate the test because it is "online" and fail because they don't understand when to click.
